HIV / STD / PrEP
The following is a list of locations where you can get STD/STI testing and PrEP & PEP in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is a biomedical intervention that consists of taking one pill (Truvada) daily to prevent and reduce HIV infection. It is recommended that PrEP is used in combination with condoms. Think of PrEP like birth control; birth control prevents pregnancy if taken correctly and consistently. PrEP can prevent HIV if taken correctly and consistently. For more information about PrEP, visit https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/risk/prep/index.html.
What is PEP?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) means taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. PEP should be used only in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after a recent possible exposure to HIV. If you think you’ve recently been exposed to HIV during sex or through sharing needles and works to prepare drugs, or if you’ve been sexually assaulted, talk to your healthcare provider about PEP right away.
