6:00 am: Rainbow Crosswalk
June 1, 2019 –
Mobile, AL 36602
Rainbow Mobile would love to announce that with the help of local artists and the Mobile Arts Council we will create a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Conti and South Joachim Streets on Saturday, June 1st, 2019. This crosswalk in downtown Mobile will pay tribute to the local music scene, our Mardi Gras culture, our iconic azalea flower, and the local LGBTQ community. The crosswalk will also be the first of its kind in the entire state of Alabama, but will not be a permanent fixture.
“The purpose behind this art project is to celebrate the culture and beauty of Mobile and surrounding areas while also increasing the visibility of our local LGBTQ community,” said Rainbow Mobile’s Founder and Executive Director, Bryan Fuenmayor. “We at Rainbow Mobile believe that the more positive visibility our LGBTQ community has, the fewer misconceptions and less stigma there will be. We believe in diversity and inclusion, and we are immensely proud of our city and its culture. We thought it fitting to complete this project at the start of Pride Month.”
Artists will be using spray chalk, the same medium used a couple of years ago for another Mobile Arts Council project. Artists will begin spraying early in the morning on Saturday, June 1st, with barricades on surrounding roads. The process should take a maximum of two hours. The crosswalk is expected to last approximately one month depending on weather and traffic.
We welcome the public to join us on this momentous day as we will have coffee provided by Starbucks, and Rainbow Mobile will provide some food while we watch the artists at work to create this beautiful historic crosswalk.
The names of the participating artists are as follows:
The intersection is right by Cafe 219 Restaurant, Backflash Antique Mall, and the Saenger Theater.
Information about some of the artists:
